| Immediately north east of Halong Bay lies it's less frequented but equally beautiful neighbour Bai Tu Long Bay. Here the calm waters of the South China Sea provide an ideal location for sea kayaking as we paddle through some dramatic scenery. With our modern kayaking equipment we are able to maximize on speed and manoeuverability and explore hidden lagoons and deserted beaches that are difficult to access by other means. On this trip we venture to the furthest reaches of the bay by a combination of kayaks and our support vessel to the secluded and beautiful setting of Quan Lan Island. The island is best known for its wonderful 1 km stretch of white-sand beach and provides us with a superb area to camp. Our new fleet of kayaks is light, stable and safe with lightweight aluminium paddles. All passengers and guides are supplied with modern, international standard buoyancy vests. We also use lightweight two person tents, all of which are fitted with mosquito screens. In keeping with our philosophy on safety, our guides have been trained in basic first aid and CPR by an international medical clinic. Day 1 Hanoi - Cat Ba Island This morning at 6.30am we leave Hanoi, bound for the major port city of Hai Phong, about two hours drive from the capital. From here we board a ferry to Cat Ba Island, the largest island in World Heritage listed Halong Bay. Once on Cat Ba Island we check into our guesthouse before setting out to explore Cat Ba National Park, the old military hospital cave and the local markets. This afternoon we will spend some time with our guide familiarizing our selves with the kayaking equipment in preparation for the days ahead. In the evening our guide will escort us to the best place in town for some tasty fresh seafood! (Dinner included) Day 2 Ba Cat Beach - Ngoc Vung Island Today the adventure begins, as we set off in our kayaks. We will have between two to three hours of paddling time amongst some of the most stunning scenery Vietnam has to offer. Our tiny kayaks are dwarfed against the massive limestone peaks that tower above us as weave our way through the labyrinth of islets. We sail to the pretty beach of Ba Cat before continuing on to deserted Ngoc Vung beach. This will be our home for tonight and upon arrival we will set up our camp and then have time to explore the surrounding area in our kayaks, or if you prefer, go for a swim in one of the secluded lagoons. This evening, after our cooks have prepared the evening meal we can unwind under a canopy of stars and chat with our guide and support staff. (Breakfast, lunch and dinner included) Day 3 Quan Lan Island (formerly Van Don port) Following breakfast we weigh anchor and enjoy a cruise on the emerald waters of Halong Bay aboard our support vessel. At around lunchtime we arrive at one of the most beautiful and unspoiled islands in Halong Bay - Quan Lan Island. Although now deserted, between the 14th and 18th centuries the island was the site of Vietnam's first international port, Van Don. Here, merchant ships from as far afield as the Middle East, Java and Japan would converge to buy local produce, most notably ivory and tea. Whilst we make our way to Quan Lan, a delicious, fresh seafood lunch will be served on board before we come ashore and set up camp for the night. For those who still yearn activity and exercise there is the chance to once again explore the surrounding area by kayak. If lazing around on an isolated beach with a good book and working on your tan is more your scene then this is most definitely the place for you. Quan Lan Island boasts a magnificent crescent-shaped white sandy beach. (Breakfast and lunch and dinner included) Day 4 Quan Lan Island - Hanoi This morning we rise to the sound of the waves gently lapping against the shore. Quan Lan's appeal is primarily due to its isolation. Here there are no signs of man's intervention, save for the abandoned ruins of old Van Don port. We have a very relaxed schedule this morning. You can stroll along the beach or get back into the clear blue waters and either swim or kayak. Later this morning we visit the newly recognized Bai Tu Long National Park. We then load all the equipment onto the support vessel and bid our isolated island paradise farewell. We have a long cruise on the support vessel back to Halong City and civilization, where we will meet our vehicle to transfer us back to Hanoi. (Breakfast and lunch included)
